Welcome to NEW.YORK opens in Cannes, but no belgian release!!!!!!
The Cannes Film Festival’s opening weekend just got more interesting with news that maverick director Abel Ferrara’s highly anticipated Gerard Depardieu – Jacqueline Bisset starrer, Welcome To New York, will be screened in a special outside of selection berth.
The movie will be screened in international premiere Saturday May 17th, the day the film becomes publicly available on the streaming platform in the festival’s host country, as well as other European territories. The Belgium release date in cinemas will be May 21.
Welcome to New York will not be released theatrically in Belgium.
Belga Films and Umedia agreed last week on a distribution deal for Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to NY. The film traces the story of one of the world’s most powerful man’s sudden and humiliating fall into disgrace. Depardieu plays, a man according to the synopsis as ‘a man who handles billions of dollars a day, who controls the economic fate of nations, a man who dreamed of saving the world and cannot save himself’. Legendary British actress, Jacqueline Bisset plays his wife, Simone Deveraux.
French sales house Wild Bunch recently announced a move to release Ferrara’s film as an E-Cinema release in France, bypassing a theatrical launch. Although Belga Films and Umedia had considered a wide Belgian theatrical release in a first instance, both partners have decided today to follow the French straight to digital release strategy, which they feel is a better adapted release platform for the film. Belga Films is currently working on the digital distribution towards the earliest possible release date. Release date will be communicated shortly.
The film will be screened in a special outside of selection berth during the Cannes Film Festival’s opening weekend.
Depardieu and Bisset will be on hand to speak to international media at a special press conference, and the fire-cracker combination of Ferrara and two such media profiled actors will no doubt become one the weekend’s most talked about events.
Ferrara’s latest movie, which follows the Venice Film Festival slotted 4:44 Last Day on Earth, Welcome to New York has attracted vast media attention since entering production last year.
